7 of the World’s Weirdest Airbnbs You Can Actually Sleep In

If your idea of adventure includes trading cookie-cutter hotel rooms for something with a little more personality, well so is ours. From oversized vegetables to architectural wonders and nursery rhymes brought to life, these Airbnbs offer the kind of overnight experience you’ll definitely want to tell people about (probably more than once). Here are seven of the strangest, and frankly unforgettable, Airbnbs you can actually sleep in.

The Haines Shoe House – York, Pennsylvania, USA

Built in 1948 by American businessman and philanthropist, Mahlon Haines, this massive boot-shaped house was originally a marketing gimmick (and a good one at that since he was essentially a shoe magnate). Now, it's a fully functional Airbnb featuring three bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, a kitchen, and a cozy living area. Guests can enjoy amenities like a hot tub, fire pit, and picnic area. It is located just outside of New York City. Ok maybe it’s a three hour drive but when else would you be able to say that you slept in a shoe?

Small but mighty and very well furnished, this Airbnb is perfectly located on a field (The Big Idaho Potato Hotel)

The Big Idaho Potato Hotel – Boise, Idaho, USA

Ah, to sleep in a potato. This six-ton spud-shaped structure, once a traveling advertisement for Idaho potatoes (we do love the marketing stunts), has been transformed into a cozy one-bedroom retreat. Inside, guests find a plush queen bed, stylish decor, and a silo-turned-spa bathroom. The vibe is kept extremely authentic as it is set on a farm, blending the novelty aspect with comfort. It’s mash-terful….

For the architecturally-inclined (Cube House)
For the architecturally-inclined (Cube House)

Cube House – Rotterdam, Netherlands

Designed by architect Piet Blom in the 1970s, Rotterdam's Cube Houses are essentially tilted cubes perched atop hexagonal pylons. Whilst many are genuinely residential addresses, one of these iconic structures is available on Airbnb, offering a multi-level living space with angular walls and panoramic windows. Located near the Blaak train station, it's a must-stay for architecture enthusiasts seeking one of those experiences which just wouldn’t stop talking about.

Yellow Submarine – Marton, New Zealand

“…a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine…a yellow submar-”. Ok that’s enough. Inspired by The Beatles' song, this vibrant yellow submarine-shaped Airbnb offers a whimsical stay in New Zealand's countryside. The interior boasts nautical-themed decor, porthole windows, and cozy sleeping quarters for up to four guests. Surrounded by lush greenery, it's just a much more fun way of spending the night.

It looks like it just came out from a fairytale book (The Boot)

The Boot – Tasman, New Zealand

Straight out of a fairytale, The Boot is a charming cottage shaped like a giant (you guessed it) boot. Nestled in New Zealand's Tasman region, it features a cozy interior with a fireplace, kitchenette, and spiral staircase leading to a snug bedroom. The surrounding gardens and outdoor seating make it a romantic getaway for couples. Again, it’s the perfect setting to pull out the cliche, “you should really try walking in my shoes for a day.”

This really looks more like an amusement park rather than an Airbnb (Quetzalcoatl’s Nest)

Quetzalcoatl’s Nest – Naucalpan, Mexico

This architectural marvel was inspired by the Aztec serpent god Quetzalcoatl. That detail in itself should be enough to get you excited but here is a brief descprtion in case you’re not yet convinced: it is a serpent-shaped structure which winds through a park. The Airbnb offers guests a chance to stay inside this colourful, mosaic-adorned creation, complete with organic shapes, vibrant interiors, and expansive windows that blend seamlessly with nature. Good enough yet?

If you can't enough of flying to different countries, you can also spend a night in a plane (Alaya Airways)
If you can't enough of flying to different countries, you can also spend a night in a plane (Alaya Airways)

Alaya Airways – Dolgellau, Wales

Once a 1970s Hawker jet, this aircraft has been transformed into a unique glamping experience named "Alaya Airways." The interior features a double bed in the cabin, a small bed in the cockpit, a fully equipped kitchen, and a bathroom with a shower. Set against the scenic backdrop of northwestern Wales, it's a high-flying adventure grounded in comfort. Don’t know how bad you want to get back on a plane when you just landed but hey-ho everyone has their passions.
